NEW YORK – Reshma Saujani today announced the formation of an exploratory committee to seek the 2010 Democratic nomination to represent New York's 14th Congressional District.
Reshma, an attorney and Democratic activist, recently resigned her position at Fortress Investment Group to focus full-time on public service, community building, and addressing New York City's increasing unemployment resulting from the sustained economic crisis. In the coming weeks, Reshma will continue her dialogue with community leaders and constituents in the 14th District, many of whom have encouraged her to run for Congress.
The daughter of refugees who fled the violence of Idi Amin's Uganda for the freedom of the United States, Reshma has a personal interest in ensuring a political voice and economic opportunity for all Americans. Her parents' story and her family's struggle to build a new life in America have informed both her legal career and her long record of community activism.
In addition to her prolific organizing for Democratic candidates and New York non-profits, Reshma has worked to increase political participation among South Asian Americans, and has volunteered with community organizations to register young voters across New York City. She has provided free legal counsel to documented immigrants in Queens, and her pro bono work as an attorney at Davis Polk & Wardwell included asylum cases to ensure representation for the most vulnerable defendants in New York City.
Reshma holds a law degree from Yale University, a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, and a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois. A resident of the Lower East Side, Reshma is currently a Research Fellow at Yale Law School, and a member of the American Democracy Institute, the Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee, and the Council on Foreign Relations.
