Reinvest in schools and kids
A strong economy in the 21st century starts with strong schools. Period. And no investment offers a bigger return than ensuring our children have the education they need to succeed. I believe that education reform is the key to long-term economic success for New York City and for America. In Congress, I will push for smart, effective school reform that prepares students to succeed in the new economy.
Today, America is in the midst of a nation educational crisis. In 17 of the nation’s fifty largest school districts, a majority of students leave high school before attaining a diploma. Public schools are more racially and economically segregated today than they were in 1970. In New York City high schools, 4 out of every 10 children do not graduate in four years. Inequities in access to early childhood education, effective teachers and college readiness persist, and in far too many instances are widening.

An unprecedented level of federal funding is changing the education landscape. To prepare our children to compete in the global marketplace, we must:
- Make early childhood education accessible to every child.
- Support and reward effective teaching, particularly for the highest need students, and strengthen training and mentoring programs for teachers and administrators.
- Promote diverse, inclusive schools where children can learn to live, play, and work across lines of race, class, religion, and nationality.
- Invest in innovation, especially in chronically underperforming schools and schools serving low-income communities of color.
- Build 21st century classrooms that provide access to computers and new technologies for every student.
