Proud to have Randi Zuckerberg's support!

I'm so proud to have Randi Zuckerberg's support.  She sent out an email to our supporters this morning:

My name is Randi Zuckerberg. I was born and raised in New York, attended school in New York City, and currently lead political, media, and non-profit initiatives for Facebook. Like you, I'm very excited that Reshma, at age 35, can become the youngest woman in the House of Representatives.

Reshma truly embodies the qualities of a candidate for this generation: young, energetic, whip smart, and compassionate. I've been very impressed with Reshma's smart use of social media, fully integrated into her campaign. Reshma listens to her constituents, empowers her supporters to help spread key messages, and uses Facebook and other powerful tools to include everyone in the political process.

No matter where you live, supporting candidates like Reshma is important to all of us.  Please help to spread Reshma's message to everyone you know!

How can you help?

1) Connect with Reshma on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/reshma2010 by clicking on the "like" button

3) Update your status on Facebook with a link to Reshma's Page by typing @Reshma and choosing Reshma's Page in the drop down menu that pops up. (very cool feature that not too many people know about!)

5) Sign up to petition and help get Reshma on the ballot!

6) Be responsible for getting five people you know in New York registered to vote and out to the polls on September 14th.

Thanks so much for your support -- I could not be more excited to support such a smart, talented, accomplished woman on her journey to Congress. We'll see you on Facebook now, and in Washington soon after!

Best,
Randi

My Plan to Prevent Another Oil Disaster

The oil catastrophe in the Gulf affects all of us and will have a devastating impact on the environment and the economy inherited by children in New York. Congress must first ensure that this never happens again -- by actually regulating the oil industry.  Next, we need to make sure that taxpayers are not signed up for a big oil bailout and that BP assumes full responsibility for the cost of the clean up and economic devastation of the spill. Finally, we need to fundamentally change a broken system in Washington where representatives accept barrels of backroom special interest money and then point the finger when barrels of oil spill in the Gulf. One of the reasons I’m running for office is because I believe we need to clean up the dirty money in Washington that allows special interests to write legislation and causes lax oversight of industries like oil and gas.  I have four proposals to address these key issues.

Reshma Saujani Statement on Memorial Day

Reshma Saujani statement on Memorial Day:

"Memorial Day is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the tremendous sacrifices by generations of selfless men and women.  Our brave soldiers have fought around the world to protect the freedoms we enjoy as Americans -- and we are forever grateful.  As the daughter of political refugees, my family taught me about the importance of democracy, and I learned at a very young age to appreciate the work of our military.

"As Americans, it is our duty to ensure we are only putting our troops in harms way when it is absolutely necessary.  When we do deploy our soldiers, we must not only provide them with the best equipment and most modern technology, but also ensure they have access to state-of-the-art facilities and top-notch hospitals when they return home.  My aunt, who was a surgeon in the Air Force, has told me heartbreaking stories about soldiers and health care.  In Congress, I will work hard to ensure that our veterans receive the care and attention they deserve.  No veteran should ever be homeless, or forgo a needed health procedure because they can't afford it.

"On this Memorial Day, I hope you will take a moment to commemorate the sacrifices endured by so many individuals and families around the United States in the name of freedom.  These patriots embody the spirit of America and everything we stand for as a nation."

Empire State of Security

Read Reshma's new op-ed on The Huffington Post, titled "Empire State of Security."

Preview:

"When most politicians and academics talk about national security, they mean traditional threats to the homeland. But our competitiveness is a critical factor in maintaining America's position as a global superpower. From mounting debt, to a deteriorating manufacturing base, to a growing trade imbalance, to the possibility of losing our AAA credit rating, our economic competitiveness and our national security are increasingly not distinct issues, but two sides of the same coin.

Militarily, America continues to project strength on the battlefields of Afghanistan and other global hotspots. Economically, however, we increasingly project weakness. A strong America requires both military and economic might. The future of our national security is inextricably linked with our efforts to get our budgets back in the black, revitalize our economy, manage our borders, and reduce our dependence on foreign sources of energy."

My "Congress Ready" Legislation

People ask me all the time: why are you running for Congress?  The answer is really simple.  New leadership and new ideas.

This is a critical moment in the history of our city and our country, and we need more than just predictable ideas and passive leadership. That's what my campaign is all about.  And that's why I've drafted legislation to help jumpstart our economy by directly empowering our entrepreneurs and our communities.

First, my Comprehensive Visa Adjustment Act of 2011 is part of my immigration reform platform that would help grow our economy, address our fiscal crisis, and secure our homeland.  The legislation I've drafted enables immigrant students with advanced degrees to earn permanent status; it increases the number of skilled worker visas; it increases the number of immigrant investors fueling American businesses; and it implements a new ‘start-up’ visa to encourage immigrant entrepreneurs to create American jobs.

I've also drafted legislation to create new National Innovation Funds.  These funds would be public-private partnerships between the government and the private sector, allowing both to invest in emerging industries and next-generation sectors critical to our economic future, such as clean energy, biotechnology, and broadband expansion, while helping entrepreneurs access the capital, resources, and mentorship they need to create jobs.  This is a creative new way to invest in the creative entrepreneurs and businesses that can lead the next wave of New York’s economic growth.

Now, I know that some people think I might be jumping the gun by introducing legislation.  It's not something that candidates usually do.  And we've got a long way to go before I can actually introduce these bills in Congress.

But this is just who I am.  I'm not willing to wait.  I'm not willing to sit around and talk about how I want things to change.  I want to start that change today - right now.  I want people to read these bills, think about these ideas and talk about them, so we can act on them.

I'm excited to offer these two pieces of legislation, and I'll continue to do so over the course of this race, because I strongly believe the 14th District deserves new leadership and new ideas.

Debating the Issues

Tonight, Republican voters will have an opportunity to see the two GOP candidates for the 14th District debate the issues.  Last week, I sent Carolyn Maloney a letter inviting her to a series of debates starting next month.  I hope she will accept my invitation to debate the important issues facing our district and our nation.

AIDS Walk on Sunday

On Sunday, I will be participating in AIDS Walk New York to show my support and raise money with more than 30 tri-state area organizations that continue to courageously fight the battle against HIV and AIDS in New York and our surrounding communities.

With more AIDS cases than Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, and Washington D.C. combined, New York City has the highest rate of AIDS cases in the entire country. With more than 100,000 New Yorkers living with HIV or AIDS, it is important that we address this issue both politically -- by correctly allocating funding and research -- and socially, by raising awareness and support around finding a cure.

Please join our team this Sunday in support of this great cause. We will be meeting at 59th and 5th Ave at 8:30am To join our team and support the cause, visit http://www.aidswalk.net/newyork and click “Register to Walk” and “Join a Team,” and then select our team name (Team Reshma) from the drop-down menu.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Kane Sarhan at Kaneforreshma2010@gmail.com.

Over the years, WIN has done so much to help young, progressive women.  I hope that if you're in DC this weekend, you'll join us for what will certainly be an interesting discussion.

Also on the agenda: a fun "Young Professionals for Reshma" event at Eye Bar on Saturday night at 8 p.m.  I'm excited to see many of my old friends -- and get to know some new ones.  We'll have a lively conversation about the issues of the day and I look forward to taking your questions.  You can find additional details and RSVP here.  Make sure to spread the word by sending the RSVP link to all of your friends!  You can tweet about the Young Professionals event by clicking here.

There's nothing like DC in the spring.  I can't wait.
